Questions and Answers
Great questions were asked during our webinar! We've rounded them up and have answered them below.
Select, Transform and Shift & Trace Tools
When using the Select tool, is it possible to rotate the box by placing the cursor anywhere outside the bounding box?
If you are struggling with the Transform tools rotation, you can activate a preference under Camera / Use Rotation Lever with Transformation tools. This preference is unchecked by default and will allow you to create a handle on the side of your bounding box, for an alternative to rotating from the corners.
Is it possible to drag-select multiple points on a deformer instead of having to select them one by one?
Yes, it is possible. Select your Transform tool and activate the Control Selection Mode from your Tool Properties. Then lasso around multiple points on a deformer to highlight them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcQGJ2UBzlY&t=24m35s
Are the legacy Shift and Trace and Drawing Desk options still available in the Drawing View?
Yes, both are still available in Harmony 16.
Can the Shift and Trace tool be used for cut-out animation?
The Shift and Trace is mostly used for paperless animation.
When coloring with the paint bucket, does the "apply to all drawings" functionality apply only to the Onion Skin View?
"Apply all drawings" applies to all drawings exposed in the layer, while Apply to Onion Skin Range applies to drawings visible in the onion skin.
Can you apply an Onion Skin to more than one layer? For example, rough animation and clean up layers?
Absolutely! For more information, you can read all about here.
Can you toggle between the shaded and normal appearance of the Onion Skin in the new Onion Skin view?
The different Onion Skin styles are available in the hamburger menu, on the top left corner of your Onion Skin view.
Can you save selections of all nodes, or is it specifically for deformer points?
You can achieve this using a script called Selection Preset. For more information, click here.
Can you use the Shake Node with a colour override to move a texture of a line?
Yes this is possible because the Shake Node is a Transformation Node just like a peg.
When using the Shake Node, in the 'steps' function, can you give it several different steps?
Functions can only have one set of steps. The frame range of steps can be defined, but only one range can be applied to a function.
Can we simulate a handheld camera with the Shake node?
With the appropriate settings, definitely!
When pegs are connected to a Waypoint, are they being controlled by the top peg?
Yes, the Waypoints are strictly an organizational tool for your Node view.
Are there any plans on adding Nodes that can be applied to the z-depth value? For instance, atmospheric fog, etc.
Thank you for your recommendation! We have added it to our "Requested Features" list and passed it along to the Product Management team.
Import, 2D-3D Integration and Rendering
If I import a PSD file, will Harmony respect my masks and/or mattes?
Unfortunately, Harmony doesn't import masks and mattes.
Can I import 3D nodes of backgrounds created in Maya into Harmony?
You can import your 3D files into Harmony under the following formats: .osb, .3ds, .obj, .fbx, .abc and .dae.
Do I still have to go to Import > Images? Or can I drag and drop images into Harmony 16?
If your images are in your Harmony Library then you can drag and drop from there to your Camera view. However, you have access to more advanced properties if you go through the File > Import menu.
Can you render a 24 fps project to 23.976 QT?
No, you cannot. Projects are rendered to the frame rate that is set in the scene settings. You can change the frame rate in the scene settings before rendering, but that will cause audio slippage.
How do I render 200 frames if I use the Loop node? And what if the cycle is 12 frames?
If your scene is 200 frames, you can simply render your entire scene as you normally would. If your scene is only 12 frames, you will need to extend it to 200 and then use the Loop node so that it fills up the entire scene.
When importing a 3D object as a 2D layer, is the positioning of the camera saved anywhere to later use in high resolution renders with an actual 3D object?
Currently, this is not possible. However, it is great feedback and we have passed it along to the Product Management team.
Can we download the Master Controller (Justin Beaver) demo rig?
You can download some demo material from our Learn Portal here.
Where can I find more information on Master Controllers?
Check out our Learn Portal here!
Is it possible to use drawing substitutions on a Master Controller to swap from one pose to the other?
Certainly, drawings will swap from one to another. However, because they are drawings, there will be no interpolation. Only keyframes will be animated from one pose to the other.
Once you set up a Master Controller and you wish to add more expressions, can you add to it at a later time?
Currently there is no way to load a pre-existing Master Controller into the interpolation grid, so you will need to redo your setup.Note that it is handy to save a preset of your grid when you create your Master Controller for future setups.
Does the new Drawing Substitutions View make a separate set of thumbnails per drawing layer?
Yes, that is the case! You will only see the available drawings for that particular layer.
I sometimes experience lag when animating. Is there an option to make a scene less heavy when animating to reduce lag when manipulating drawings?
Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this question. We recommend to work with a Display node on each character and only display the character when working on it.
Could you choose a specific frame to start the loop from with the transform loop (instead of automatically choose the last one)?
Yes, you can change the settings in your Transform Loop properties. Turn off the 'Automatic Range Detection' option and select the start and end range of your loop.
In which folder do my stamps save?
Stamps are saved in the preferences. But you can transfer stamps from one user or workstation by exporting them from the Stamp tool properties.
Where can you to to learn how to write scripts?
Are there any updates to the Script Editor in Harmony 16?
A couple of improvements have been made to the Script Editor. See the list in the release notes here.
Can we flatten the lines on vector artwork?
Yes, find out how here.
