What is Toon Boom Animation StartingPoint Courseware?

StartingPoint courseware is a teaching tool that provides a solid foundation for the future generation of animators, storyboard artists and creatives who will take over the world of storytelling. The courseware teachesIntroduction to Animation with Harmony and Introduction to storyboarding with Storyboard Pro.

Does a school have to purchase and teach both the Intro to Animation with Harmony and Intro to storyboarding with Storyboard Pro?

A school can decide to teach one course or the other or both.

How many hours is the Intro to Animation with Harmony course?

It has 26 lessons that covers approximately 110-120 hours of course material.

How many hours is the Intro to storyboarding with Storyboard Pro course?

It has 25 lessons that covers approximately 95 hours of course material.

Which school(s) can purchase the StartingPoint courseware?

High schools (grade 9) all the way up to universities can purchase and use Toon Boom StartingPoint Courseware to teach Intro to Animation and Intro to Storyboarding.

Does the school need to have a teacher with animation or storyboarding knowledge or experience in the animation industry to teach either or both courses?

No, these two courses were developed to walk both teachers and students through the courses step by step. Teachers are also provided with additional supporting teaching materials. If a teacher would like to gain more knowledge, it is possible to purchase the Train the Teacher online courses.

How are the courses delivered?

Both courses are easily accessible through an online learning management system LMS that makes it easy for teachers and students to join their class and follow along. You need to be connected to the internet and access the Animation StartingPoint courseware through the following URL: https://courseware.toonboom.com/. This courseware can be used by teachers teaching remote or in class with a lab set up.

Do the teachers need to prepare anything for these two courses?

No, both courses have all the assets needed to work with Harmony and Storyboard Pro software. Both courses include lesson videos, documentations, rubrics, quizzes, homework/work assignments and interactive activities for the students. Teacher can additionally take the Train the Teacher online training to get more comfortable with the software.

How does the teacher learn the learning management system LMS /courseware?

The teacher will receive a video, documentation and a 1:1 live onboarding remote call session with a dedicated courseware expert.

Can a teacher easily follow the progress of their students?

Yes, as the students progress through each lesson, both the teachers and students can visualize their progress through a progress dial shown in the users individual dashboard and in the teachers dashboard.

How do students deliver homework to their teacher?

The students will deliver their homework through the school portal, email or other as decided by the school.

Can students pass a certification in order to confirm their learning?

Yes, the students can take the Toon Boom associate certification test for either Harmony Premium and/or Storyboard Pro virtually delivered through a third party. Certification exams can be purchased through a Toon Boom sales representative. Onboarding

What information is required from the teacher and students to have access to the courseware?

Toon Boom Animation Inc. needs very limited personal information from schools, teachers and students in order to grant access to each of the courses within the courseware. The only information required from the school to grant access is: the name and school email of the teachers and students.

Privacy policy for StartingPoint Courseware

As a term of purchasing the Toon Boom Animation StartingPoint Courseware (the “Courseware”), [Educational Institution] acknowledges and agrees that Toon Boom will handle any personal information provided by [Educational Institution] in accordance with the Toon Boom Privacy Policy (https://www.toonboom.com/privacy-policy), including with respect to communication of such information to third parties. [Educational Institution] further acknowledges and agrees that the Courseware is delivered through a third party platform owned by Tovuti Inc. and that by using this Courseware, certain personal information provided by [Educational Institution] will be input into such platform, including student names and email addresses. [Educational Institution] hereby represents that any personal information so provided by [Educational Institution] for delivery of the Courseware has been collected, used and disclosed with the valid consent of the individual to whom it belongs, or otherwise in compliance with applicable privacy laws, including that such individual is aware that their name and email address may be shared with third party service providers (and may be processed in outside jurisdictions).

How do the students and teacher access/login to the courseware platform?

Once the teacher and students information is provided to Toon Boom Animation Inc., the teacher(s) and students will receive a welcome email from courseware@toonboom.com providing their username and password.

Which software do the teacher(s) and students need to have to follow the courseware?

The StartingPoint courseware requires teachers and students to have Harmony Premium and/or Storyboard Pro institutional license software running on a compatible/recommended hardware. Getting started

Do I need to be connected to the internet to access the StartingPoint courseware?

Yes, you need to be connected to the internet and access the Animation StartingPoint courseware with the following URL: https://courseware.toonboom.com .

How do I login to the Animation StartingPoint courseware?

You should visit: https://courseware.toonboom.com, you will then be able to enter your username/school email address and the password that was sent to you via the welcome email.

What should I do if I cannot find a welcome email?

You may want to look to see if your welcome email ended up in your Spam folder within your emails. Please look for an email that came from courseware@toonboom.com. If you can’t find it, please contact us at courseware@toonboom.com.

My Account within the StartingPoint courseware

Can I modify and add a picture in my profile account?

No. In order to limit the privacy of students, no personal information can be entered in the learning management system LMS.

Courses, interactive content, supporting documents

Where do I go to start my first lesson?

When you login to the Animation StartingPoint courseware, you will find in the menu on your left, the course module(s). Once you click on the courses icon, it will bring you to the Intro to animation course and/or Intro to storyboarding course depending on the course you registered for. Click on the course you are being taught and follow the instructions.

How do I know which lesson I have reached?

You will be able to follow your progress and see where you are by looking at the progress dial on the right of the first page of the course.

What are interactive activities?

Interactive activities are different activities such as fun videos, slide decks, and quizzes that you will find in each lesson.

What happens if I don’t complete all the interactive activities?

If you do not complete all interactive activities, the lesson will not be marked as completed. You can always go back and complete them but we recommend you always try and keep up with your class.

Where or how do students submit their homework?

Students will submit their homework through the school portal, email or other chosen by the school and/or teacher.

Where do I retrieve the lessons files and links to complete the given learning module(s)?

Each lesson has supporting documentation that is located on the bottom right side of each lesson page.

What is included in the lesson files and links?

The lessons files will provide additional information on the lesson topic, rubrics and links to online resources.

Where does a teacher find the teaching material?

A teacher will have access to the teaching materials by clicking on the Course button on the left menu bar. The teaching material courses are only available and visible to teachers in their instances of the courseware.

Progress

As a teacher, where can I see the progress of my students?

When the teacher logs in to the courseware, they see the Teacher’s dashboard with the list of their students.

If a teacher is in charge of more than one class, their classes are separated into different dashboards. They can be accessed via the dropdown menu.

There are 3 ways to view the progress and overall activity of the students.

  1. The Dashboard: You can view a student’s personal Dashboards for a quick glance at Progress percentage.
  2. The Activity Report: Activity gives you an even more granular view of how much time your student(s) are spending on each lesson and what they have and have not interacted with.
  3. The Transcript: The transcript gives a more detailed look at how many lessons your student has completed, their quiz scores, and whether or not they’ve completed the interactive content in the lesson.

 

What does the progress dial, on the course page, indicate?

The progress dial shows the total completion percentage for the course based on the number of lessons that have been completed.

Quizzes

Which lessons have review quizzes in the Intro to animation course?

Lessons 5, 10, 15 and 24 have summary quizzes.

Which lessons have review quizzes in the Intro to storyboarding course?

Lessons 5, 10, 16 and 25 have summary quizzes.

What is the pass rate of the quizzes?

To pass a quiz you need a 70%

What happens if a student doesn’t have a 70%?

A student has 3 attempts to obtain the 70% and pass the quizz. If they do not succeed, the student will be shown the score of their last attempt.

How can a teacher view the students results for the summary quizzes?

The last Thursday of every month, the teacher will receive a report containing their students’ answers to the summary quizzes.

Multiple attempts will be listed consecutively on the report.

Change/reset your password

What can I do if I forgot my password?

If you forget your password, you can reset your password from the login page.

How can I retrieve or modify my password?

You can reset your password from the login page or by clicking on the Change Password in the left menu bar when you are already logged in to the courseware.

Associate certification

What is the associate certification?

The associate certification for either Harmony Premium or Storyboard Pro is a multiple-choice exam that confirms the student’s learnings/proficiency with the software and is recognized by the industry.

How can the student have access to the associate certification?

If a school purchased the associate certification product from Toon Boom Animation Inc., the school can either have the student do the certification in school or online virtually.
