Toon Boom animation software named Animag’s Best Animation Tool 2018

by Philip Mak

19 December 2018

The industry-standard animation software for global leading productions

Leading industry publication “Animation Magazine” named
Toon Boom Harmony as Best Animation Tool on its Animag’s Best of 2018 Awards list. The year-end honours’ winners are selected by its readers, who voted from November 22 to December 10. Toon Boom Harmony animation software was chosen over runner-up, TV Paint.

“Toon Boom is humbled and honoured to be named Best Animation Tool by Animation Magazine’s readers — a literal vote of confidence from real animators that our animation software has been making a difference in the lives of animators, students, studios, children and adults everywhere,” says George Stamatakos, Toon Boom Animation director of marketing.

The Animag’s Best of 2018 Award win further confirms Toon Boom Animation’s position as the industry-standard 2D animation software, used in 80 percent of productions worldwide including household names like Family Guy, Archer and a growing number of Japanese anime. Notably, many of the other winners and runner-ups on the “Animation Magazine” list are also connected to the Montreal-based company. This speaks not only to Toon Boom 2D animation software’s utility and ubiquity, but also to the undeniable role it has played in supporting the industry’s leading creative work.

For instance, both of the leaders in the Best Prime Time TV Series category were created in Toon Boom software — winner BoJack Horseman is storyboarded in Toon Boom Storyboard Pro and runner-up The Simpsons is produced in both Storyboard Pro and Harmony. Other series made in the leading digital solutions include Hilda (runner-up, Best New Series) and SpongeBob SquarePants (winner, Best Kids/Family Series).

The connections extend to studios and schools as well, with Toon Boom software being the preferred 2D animation tools at Walt Disney Animation Studios (winner, Best Feature Animation Studio) and Gobelins (runner-up, Best Animation School). And things are only just getting started. The industry is in a new golden age, with the combined animation, VFX and gaming market projected to hit $270 billion worldwide by 2020.

Toon Boom Animation is committed to developing a global self-sustaining animation ecosystem, whether it be supporting emerging talent in Africa with DISCOMICS Iqembu or established studios in India like Toonz Media Group.

“Our team understands that cartoons are more than entertainment — they are opportunities to empower communities economically and culturally by giving them access to creative careers, an international industry and the chance to tell their stories,” says Francois Lalonde, Toon Boom Animation co-president and VP sales and marketing.

Once Toon Boom’s mission is complete, the entire animation industry will be winners too. Congratulations to all the other Animag’s Best of 2018 honourees!
